Would I lay pad or plywood underneath laminate flooring on Pier and Beam?

Laminate Floors - affordable alternative to the hard wood flooring.

My dad is in a wheelchair and weighs 350lbs or so. They already have some sort of wood underneath their carpet, but my mother was told she could use a pad instead. Would my dad's wheelchair be too much weight and ruin the floors? Seems like the pad wouldn't support the heavy wheelchair and my dad without cracking or creasing the laminate. Please help.
