Dropping the last empty moving box on top of a pile I scanned the apartment. The off white walls stared back at me, gently reminding me of some sort of asylum, and the grubby laminated floor curled slightly where it met the wall. Our furniture was awkwardly set in the room, looking alien in this new home, and my futile attempts to make it 'homely' stuck out like a sore pathetic thumb. Sighing I rubbed my neck, granted it isn't the nicest of places but it'll do. I made my way over to my Dad's room and gently knocked on his door before cracking it open staring into the room. The curtains were pulled, blocking any and all sunlight from entering as he was wrapped up in duvet- despite the fact it was only 5pm
"Dad, I've finished unpacking so I'm going to go and get us some food." My voice was shaky as I stared down at the man I once admired. The only response I was given was a brief grunt before he rolled over, unable to look at me too long. Grabbing my jacket and purse I left, locking the door after me, before wandering around my new neighbourhood looking for a place to get some take-out.
It shouldn't be like this.
A small voice at the back of my head stated, and try as I might I couldn't help but to agree. It shouldn't. My Father shouldn't be like this; but he is. He wasn't always so...detached, so broken, up until two months ago he was like any other Dad but then Mum died. Then Mum died and everything changed.
-So this is just the first draft of a new book I'm writing and I was wondering if the opening is intriguing enough to make you want to read it, I'm up for any type of constructive criticism-
