Is it possible to beat a mild pet allergy with grooming and cleanliness etc?

Laminate Floors - affordable alternative to the hard wood flooring.

Hi, we got a border collie (cross) yesterday from the rescue shelter. She's lovely! However my husband and I have been noticing hayfever like symptoms (we both suffer, have never had a dog allergy before). Not too bad, but our 14month old daughter has also been rubbing her eyes and nose so we're thinking she's feeling the same : ( She hasn't been cranky or anything which is why we think its fairly mild with her too.
I read that regular brushing of the dog can help considerably, as can keeping the place hoovered etc. It's laminate flooring we have (dog not allowed in bedrooms) and she's not been on sofa except when it's been covered. She's not been brushed yet (dog, not daughter!), will need to buy a brush (knew we'd forget something!), do you think this will help? Please say yes!! Anyone living with a dog and an allergy? If we'd known we'd have got a different haired dog (all 3 of us def not allergic to long haired dogs, been around them, and we'd probably be okay with short haired ones too) but she's here now and I really want her to stay!
