We moved into a house about 5 months ago and quickly started to notice a faint cabbagy smell that some days, was really strong and some days went. It was only noticeable downstairs in our house in the living room and hall so we started closing the doors on an evening before bed and by morning it was clear that it was strongest in our living room. We sniffed around a lot and narrowed it down to a gap between the skirting board and laminate flooring towards the front of the house.
After talking to family and friends and looking online we ended up opening the manhole covers for the drains outside our house and found that they were really badly blocked. We called someone out to unblock the drain and they found that the blockage was in line with our living room just a few metres away from where we'd narrowed the smell down to. They successfully cleared the blockage and the smell within a few days, was gone!
Within the past couple of weeks I have noticed it has returned and is getting worse by the day. We have checked the drains and they are running fine. We often put bleach down our plugs and toilet. I don't understand what it could be. The smell drives me insane, it is disgusting and no matter how much I clean, bleach, air the house out, light candles, place odour bags, use air freshener, do anything, I can't get rid of it. Does anybody have ANY idea of what it could be?
